Hey Bing, I'm seeing the Madrid date, but I'm not seeing any Montana dates. What gives? Nah, kidding, I've already done the 'mapquest' on the trip, and it doesnt look good (looks great without an infant, about 16 hours)...
Just missin ya', listening to an old "Bite" show from 03' as I type.
We do have a couple excellent venues to play at here; one, in the summer (its -20 today without any windchill factors) that is tucked in amongst some massive peaks, just outside of Y'stone park, that bands play around a fire pit for 'a couple 100 people' I am told. I am setting up a gig there for Uncle Snock in June...just trying to make you think about a little high mountain vacation/tour...dreaming over here. See ya in Portland otherwise!

Yo Yo Bingo,
Vacation is credited to Robin on the HMR's album Too Much Fun.
I was playing the song in C with an alternating G base note this morning. I am curious, which key do you like to play this song in?
Just another music geek and fan of the wierd,

reply to Kris:
Hi Kris.
The HooDoo Bash was written by Antonia and Peter Stampfel and was a song played by the Holy Modal Rounders. All of the rooms at the White Eagle are named after 'Rounder tunes. HooDoo Bash is room 5. I just stayed there myself not long ago. Didn't have any haint visitation, personally.
From what I gather, another room there has a spirit as well.. the Happy Rolling Cowboy room long ago was the scene of a murder. Things were different in the early days of Portland; upstairs at the Eagle was a brothel. There is more information about the place at the McMenamin's website. I'm glad you like the song. It has been a favorite of mine for a while, although I seldom perform it...only when the spirit moves me.
hope to see you soon.
happy holidays,

So glad to have caught your set at the Thirst on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. I'm always grateful to hear you play. Especially want to thank you for dance tunes that night. I love when music takes me to that ego-less dancing-with-joy place! Blessings to you.
Gots a Question -- you sang about the HooDoo; is that a reference to the room at the White Eagle? If so, then you might be interested to know when I stayed in that room for Halloween this year I had a visit from a male spirit. Told him I'd had a great time as many others had, thanked it for sharing space with us and wished it well. Later, when I was deep asleep, I woke with a start to that spirit pulling on my ankle. Jokester! Like coyote! Staff says that spirit is the man who died there. So, just curious, is your Hoodoo song about the room??

Bingo. Its a sweet bitterness that you were here and now you aren't. I always look forward to the fun and frolics when you return, but in order to be glad you're back means you must always go. :( Balance in all things I guess. Thank you so much for your kind words to me, you are very touching and thoughtful friend. Happy holidays seasonal wishings and blessed love to you and the desert creatures and things in your world down there. Hope to see you soon again.
Lots of Luna love to you - and everyone!

Hi Bingo,
Original poster here. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Sorry, I must have just been in a rough mood and I was taken aback by your statement. Probably uncalled for to have this discussion in your guestbook like you said.
Thanks for all the great tunes and good times. You truly are a fantastic musician. Hope to see you playing for years to come!

I don't know what happened to free speech.
I don't know what happened to discretion or manners or some folks' sense of humor either.
I don't know what really happened to Kennedy, either.
I do know what happened to your previous post, though.
I read it, saw your point of view, realized that you may have something there:
then, in a moment of weakness I removed the text that offended you and deleted your post because I didn't want to focus on being chided by an anonymous poster for excersizing my free speech on a website that I pay for.
I wasn't trying to offend anyone with saying that we don't do requests. Obviously that isn't true, we usually try to accomodate in that regard IF we know the tune. Honestly, I was trying to be funny and I guess it didn't read that way. So I erased it.
About requests, though..
I remember one time I was listening to a live recording of Ray Charles and there were some people hollering out songs that they wanted to hear.
Ray said something to the effect that his band had worked really hard on the material that they were there to perform and that he wasn't a jukebox and that he didn't like being hollered at, anyhow.
It is good to hear from folks and it is nice to know that there are songs that folks want to hear. It's really all in the exchange. Asking is one thing..
Please allow me to illustrate.
The "oh yeah" department portion of that news stemmed from a particularly difficult gig where there were a couple of people that were all fucked up and kept getting in my face after EVERY SONG to ask me (actually they were demanding) to play songs I didn't know. I was polite. I said that I didn't know those songs, but I know some others and I hoped that they could enjoy them. After two sets of being interrupted and getting really bummed out figuring that what I wanted to play wasn't good enough for these folks I said "Tell you what, I'm going to do just one more song, and then you can turn the jukebox back on and listen to whatever you want." I quit early. I felt bad. I probably shouldn't have, but I did.
So, it's all a matter of how it goes down. I just figured I would stop trying to accomodate and play what I wanted from then on and if it's not what somebody else wants to hear, they don't have to listen.
I have a lot of getting ready to do for the drive up to portland, so i have to cut this short; but I would like to add something.
I would rather, if I inadvertantly hurt your feelings in the future, be discreet and have a private communication with you so that we can work things out without everybody else having to wade through one individual's grievances. So, you know, sign your name or email me personally next time. We can even discuss 'passive-agressive' behavior or anything else.
Thanks for the opportunity to examine my thoughts regarding these issues.
Love and respect,
bing

Hey hey Bing, rumors are a flyin about you making some of the Mcminnie shows this time around. Makin plans, inviting friends up for the shows and wondering which if any might include your sweetself. Also, still hoping that you and Jessie might make your way to Andy's for Thanksgiving - he is gettin to be quite hAndy on the banjo and his daughter is an absolute nugget of fleshy bitability and yumminess! I sometimes wonder if its okay to want to bite a child as much as I want to bite Haven...excited that you might play some of the mighty McMenamin Bro Shows!!!!!

Hey Kevin,
Does anyone call you that anymore? It's Steph, Little and Big Sue's friend and old roommate there on 31st (upstairs of Gerald' s - the poets), that moved away, back to WV (after a stint to Mexico). Hope that's enough details and you remember me. Just checking out your website and, soon, your music, when I have a chance. I often think fondly of you going to that old school gym that Sue Vasher and I joined, and using all the neck building iron machines and not being able to move your head for a week or something. Not sure how fondly you'd recall that one. I live in Knoxville, TN, am married, a Mom, play in a band with my husband called The Lonetones. It was great to know you back then and get to hear and be around so many good musicians, it really put the fire under my ass, which I'm grateful for. I am really happy to be back here in Appalachia, but recall fondly my west coast days and all those good folks out there. Look me up if ever you get this way. Maybe you can play TN sometime! Steph

Bingo,
I remember talking to you on the phone last night at the gig with Hurley and Dave and Jimmy at Biddy's. I don't remember what either of us said, but it was a good thing. Today Spud, Turtle, Stew Dodge, Doc Chettum and me went to Fritz Richmond's house and played some music. Fritz has liver cancer but he played three songs with us. It was a good thing. Carmen says you are playing some gigs with the Phoreheads this summer. That would be a good thing. Sound like you are doing some good things!
